Andy was a high school freshman who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and frequently wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. The basic drawback with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore able from a legal perspective to drive a car or truck and to ingest alcohol.
Andy, on the other hand, had a tough time accepting the actuality that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking. In fact, however, Andy frequently drank with his guy friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his cronies was old enough to purchase alcohol. After buying some wine coolers, beer, and wine, Andy and all of the guys went to a recreational area and drank for approximately three hours.
After drinking more or less six glasses of wine, Andy started to feel queasy and then threw up. When he lost consciousness on the baseball field, one of his cronies called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his guy friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been going through alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.
After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was in point of fact flabbergasted to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten drinks. When he articulated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, conversely, the doctor told Andy that drinking five or ten alcoholic beverages over a two or three hour period of time could in fact be quite a bit more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The healthcare practitioner further articulated how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this occurs, a person can cease to exist.
This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a dangerous fashion and that there are repercussions for such actions. The doctor told Andy that he was a lucky person because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The physician also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol treatment for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was safe and told the doctor that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol treatment.
While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a special reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school in health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost passed away, nevertheless, he felt that he should have listened more closely in health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to a subject that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
