A Woman Exhibits Symptoms Of Depression And Alcohol Abuse And Makes An Appointment To See Her Medical Practitioner

Cindy was a thirty-four-year-old receptionist who realized that she had some drinking issues. As an illustration, within the past five months she has felt the need to have a few drinks before going to work, five weeks ago she tested positive for a blood alcohol test at work, four weeks ago she got arrested by the state highway patrol for a DUI, and last but not least, for approximately three months she has started to fail to remember what she says and does when she goes out drinking.

Not unlike multitudes of other people, Cindy's involvement with alcohol started out at a "snail's pace" and stayed at this speed for quite some time due to the fact that every now and then she engaged in sporadic social drinking. As a matter of fact, for almost three years, every time she went out to drink, she made sure to drink responsibly. Something about her drinking circumstances, however, seemed to fundamentally change when her husband divorced her.

Cindy got exceedingly "down" about the loss of her husband, and as a way to quit obsessing about her disheartening emotions she made up her mind to start hanging around more routinely with some of her pals who love to "get down" and drink. It didn't take long, however, before her drinking increased to a significant extent the more often she went to and drank at private parties, family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, and happy hours with her pals.

In brief, she was drinking and having tons of fun just like everybody else in her group of friends without giving too much consideration about the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been manifesting. Yet somewhere in her brain she knew about the adverse alcohol effects on the body and on the mind and that she most likely required alcohol rehab but sidestepped the thought as much as humanly possible.

One late afternoon during her annual physical, her healthcare practitioner asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell "stories" to her healthcare practitioner, Cindy disclosed the truth that she frequently drinks more than she should. In actual fact, she said that she commonly drinks in an irresponsible manner. Then Cindy told her healthcare practitioner about her constant negativity. More explicitly, she articulated that shattered relationships usually sparked a discouraging cycle of events characterized by increased drinking which further led to more dismal feelings that, in turn, resulted in even more drinking. And this is specifically what happened when she and her husband got divorced four months ago.

Cindy's healthcare professional then told her the following: "I am not trying to make a spur-of-the-moment diagnosis, but with your medical circumstances e may be working with two separate concerns. As a result, I think we need to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse evaluation from my partner, Dr. Galloway, who is a substance abuse and chemical dependency specialist."

"Whether your drinking situation is more linked to alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse is not clear, but I think that further evaluation is defensible. Then I think we ought to schedule an appointment for you to get a psychological evaluation from another one of my partners, Dr. Katz, ."

"I want to get a better read on your melancholy and see how much your depression and drinking are associated." Cindy expressed her agreement with her healthcare practitioner's treatment plan and thanked him for his assistance and concern.
