Ralph started drinking heavily when he was a senior in high school. Fortunately for him, although he drank excessively and abusively when he was an adolescent and a young adult, over the years he has been mostly a moderate drinker.
After he finished his education he eventually landed a job at a local metal recycling plant where he worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing agent. Unlike his other positions, as the purchasing manager he frequently took potential vendors and existing vendors to lunch and to various sporting events.
Although it was not written in stone, meeting with potential vendors and existing vendors constantly involved situations in which alcohol was present. In point of fact, over the past thirteen months, Ralph had begun to greatly increase his work related and his social drinking. This has led to a dilemma. To be precise, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink.
In point of fact, it did not take long at all before Ralph's excessive drinking started to negatively affect his mental health, his relationships, his work efficiency, the money in his savings account, and his health. At one point, Ralph, as a matter of fact, began to get worried about his unhealthy and excessive drinking and wondered if his alcohol-related concerns were alcoholism signs. Furthermore, his increasing feelings of depression also made him wonder if he was becoming an alcohol addicted individual. In short, Ralph obviously needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and the signs of alcoholism.
So Ralph used his problem solving ability, called his physician, and set up an appointment for a complete physical exam. A week later after seeing his family doctor, Ralph unfortunately found out that he was dependent on alcohol. His doctor informed Ralph that he needed to get alcohol detoxification and alcohol rehab for his alcohol dependency and that he also needed to get treatment for his depression. In a word, Ralph needed treatment for his alcohol dependency and depression.
His family doctor suggested to Ralph that he request a one-month leave of absence from work and get enrolled in a quality in-patient alcohol rehabilitation clinic where his depression could also be evaluated and treated. This is precisely what Ralph did. The good news is that after his treatment for depression and for alcohol addiction, he felt like a different individual. In truth, now that he was sober he hardly ever got depressed and he now knew how to more successfully and productively manage his job, his relationships, his finances, and his health.
To no one's amazement, the biggest test Ralph faced was at the office. More precisely, he still took potential vendors and his existing vendors to lunch and to various sporting events, but after his alcohol rehab he managed to abstain from drinking while entertaining his clients.
It may be noted that Ralph also learned that none of his existing vendors or potential vendors thought any less of him because of his alcohol-free lifestyle. To the contrary, he discovered that his potential vendors and existing vendors respected him for staying true to his convictions.
After Ralph went through alcohol rehab he found out that if he refrained from drinking, all of the other significant parts of his life would be fortified. Every once-in-a-while, it can be pointed out, Ralph missed drinking, but the better health, relationships, finances, and the better work performance he experienced more than offset his craving for alcohol.
