Anxiety Disorders Come In Many Forms

Anxiety disorders have been gaining a lot of attention as of late, as American public service campaigns call on friends to stand by their colleagues that may have a mental problem. The commercials that air on national television touch on the antagonizing patterns that usually develop during anxiety disorders, and urge people to seek assistance and extend a level of support to the person suffering.

But, just how widespread are anxiety disorders in the US and what forms can they assume? According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, this collective condition plagues some 40 million Americans. With a number of different forms, anxiety disorders can vary from having rather mild symptoms to very strong fears.

The different types of anxiety disorders are:

Generalized Anxiety - Affecting some 6.8 million Americans age 18 or beyond, this form of the condition is expressed by a patient becoming extremely worried over everyday events. Individuals with this condition can discover themselves being blocked off from life by fears that grow out of either, logical or unreasonable reasons.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - With some 2.2 million Americans suffering from this form of condition, it is the least prevalent of the disorders. This condition is distinguished by an urge to carry out repetitive acts in an almost ritualistic manner. Hand washing is a typical pattern of this condition.

Panic Disorder - This form of condition involves fear or panic attacks. It strikes some 6 million people and can be a rather disabling disorder. Since panic attacks duplicate heart attacks and other severe conditions, people quite often literally believe they are dying while in the midst of an attack. In most cases, anything that has triggered a panic attack in the past should be prevented at all costs.

Post traumatic Stress - This specific disorder is thought to impact on about 7.7 million people. It is brought on by extreme trauma, such as rape, abuse or seeing a brutal act.

Social Anxiety - With 15 million people suffering from this form of anxiety, the condition is considered very serious. Generally, this is the form of anxiety targeted by the public service ads on American television. In its gravest form, people with this condition should avoid public areas at all costs.

Phobias - An irrational fear of heights, spiders, snakes and other such things can cause a person to be afflicted with a severe bout of anxiety. This condition affects approximately 19 million people and covers a host of various phobias.

Anxiety disorders are more prevalent than many people realize. When the symptoms are serious and they incapacitate a person from common activities, help should be sought. Medical doctors, psychologists and other therapists can assist patients to control their anxiety disorders in many ways.
