My husband & I own 2 dogs. They're considered a part of the family and we attempt to include them in many of the things we like to do. This means that we have accumulated plenty of dog stuff through the years. It is astounding the amount of advertising there is that gets directed toward canine owners & pet owners on the whole. The marketers know that people love their housepets & are willing to spend plenty of money on them. It seems that each holiday season there is more & more canine stuff in the stores.
This past holiday season I couldn't believe my eyes when I was in the accessory a segment of a national department-store. At the start I thought there was a brand-new a segment of doll garments that was placed in this department. Upon looking closer I realized that the clothing were for dogs. Along with the clothes there were beds, toys, an
anti bark collar, designer dishes & other dog stuff. This is a shop that doesn't ordinarily have a housepet section. I asked one of the sales clerks when this a segment of the anti bark collar & other canine stuff had been added. She said that it was part of their holiday celebration nation wide. It seems that individuals were asking for more items that they could get, not only for their dog, but for the pets of their friends. I jokingly asked if this didn't snub cat owners, but I was told that the pet cat merchandize was on the opposite side of the display I was looking at.
The canine stuff included very elaborate out-fits for the holidays, together with the anti bark collar. Velvet gowns, satin off the shoulder cocktail gowns, & the more traditional knit sweaters. There were also collars that were decorated with sequins & stones. I could tell that the sales clerk was not thrilled with this new merchandize. I commented that our female dog would certainly prefer precious stones. When I mentioned this she directed me over to the fine jewelry counter & showed me a display of precious & semi precious collars. I could not believe what I was seeing. I had heard that there were specialty stores & catalogs that dealt with this sort of dog stuff, but I not ever believed that it would be featured in a national department-store. The clerk mentioned that they had a sizeable display of Halloween costumes in the fall together with unique treats for the 4 legged trick or treater's.
I came home and told my husband about the display of canine stuff. He commented that we might be recipients of some of the things, because our family members & friends know that we indulge our dogs. I told him that if we did get some-thing I hoped it would be the fourteen carat gold collar with the pearl pendant.
