Small Breed Dog Training

The reason why dog lovers have got this preconceived belief that small breed pups are more difficult to train than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not be problematic.

Small dog training, is in no way different from training a dog of any other larger sized breed. Although training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, practically all other aspects remain identical, and the technique to training the pup should stay the same, not withstanding its size.

However, I will make an exception here, and accept that small dog training may present problems in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.

If a smaller breed dog is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a small breed pup cannot be potty trained or poses challenges in being crate trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us analyze how and why.

Aggression.

Smaller dogs are loved because they are cute, they are like playthings. Owners enjoy having their puppy sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the difficulty commences. The basic aggressive nature of the canine, is to claim ownership over its sector, its food, even its master; all puppies strive to be the alpha dog.

It is the hostile streak in the puppy that provokes it to get on to the lap of its master, above all when there are lots of people seated in the room.

This is a outright act of violence. Instead of chiding the pup, every owner with the exception of no one, would cuddle the dog, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, fostering the aggressive streak in the puppy. By doing this the owner has okayed the pup's inherent need to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a a bigger size dog is another clear act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is viewed as cute, just because one dog is tiny while the other is large. Most owners praise the dog instead of admonishing it, when it displays this aggression against a larger dog.

These are but instances as to why small breed puppies are aggressive, and not because small dog training is problematic.

Bathroom Training

Owners are inclined to haul their small dogs around where ever they are, even while they are at home and that makes it practically impossible to potty train them

It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small breed dogs to carry the animal to the area where the pooch should do its dirty business and then lug it back into the house.

It is this routine of carrying the pooch to the outdoors to poop that is the root of all problems. In addition, as the pup is as a general rule carried around so much it has no way of it indicating to or notifying the owner that it has to poop.

Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be shown their potty area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the best part of pup training, and so it can be, even in Small Dog Training.
