What Are The Main Reasons And Symptoms Of Clinical Depression?

Major depressive disorder, (also called clinical depression) is a common problem which affects 1 in 10 people. We are all susceptible to it regardless of age, gender or where we live. Before we consider the symptoms of depression, we have to realize what is depression. Basically, depression is a psychological disorder which affects the way people think, how they feel. It also affects their energy levels and their attitude against themselves and other people. There are numerous reasons why it occurs in people. For some, it may have been the break down of a relationship or there could have been economic problems. A bereavement or even bullying could cause the disorder for some. In other cases, they may have an inherent predisposition towards it.

When we consider what's depression from a severity perspective, there are four major severity levels or forms of depression: mild, moderate, severe and bipolar. With the mild type, the person faces fatigue, indecision, lack of concentration, sleep disturbance and lack of confidence. Here it is to be stated that the person is not necessarily always in a depressed condition.

In the moderate type, the individual will have all the symptoms of the mild type but in addition will appear depressed to other people.

Severe depression not only shows all the symptoms as in the mild and moderate but also causes the person to have suicidal tendencies. People suffering from severe depression are incredibly pessimistic about their self worth. They may even experience hallucinations. Severe depression patients may also also experience delusions about being terminally ill. When both delusions and hallucinations are present, it is called psychotic depression.

Another kind of depression is the bipolar disorder. In this type, there are both the extremes. At some periods the person is manic (full of energy) and at others depressive.

These are the typical depression symptoms:

1) Having low energy and feeling tired and exhausted.

2) Lack of concentration.

3) Waking up frequently at night.

4) Feeling sad or bored.

5) Feeling of guilt.

6) Lack of interest in living.

7) Aches and pains which have no physical source.

As with any other physical or psychological health condition, the initial step of treatment of any clinical depression case is to first understand what is clinical depression, and then being able to identify the main symptoms of the disorder. Once the early warning signs are acknowledged and a diagnosis is made, the treatment will usually produce positive results.
